My last twitching, the first ouside Italy. Pacific diver at Silvaplana Lake (CH).
Il mio ultimo twitch, il primo all'estero. Strolaga del Pacifico al lago di Silvaplana (CH).
On 13 December 2015 a loon is observed at Lake Silvaplana in Switzerland. Probably at first it is mistaken for a more common arctic loon then, after a few days, is identified as a rare loon Pacific.
On December 20 the news comes in Italy and two days later together with Menotti Passarella we move to Silvaplana in the canton of Grisons.
Il 13 Dicembre 2015 una strolaga è stata osservata al lago di Silvaplana in svizzera. Probabilmente in un primo momento è stata scambiata per una più comune strolaga mezzana ma, dopo alcuni giorni, è stata identificata come una rara strolaga del Pacifico.
Il 20 Dicembre la notizia arriva in Italia e due giorni dopo assieme a Menotti Passarella ci dirigiamo a Silvaplana nel Canton Grigioni.
It's the first time I twitch a bird outside Italy but it's a great opportunity to see so great a rarity for central/south Europe at about 400 km (6 hours) from home.
So we do not hesitate and arrange the travel as soon as possible because I had a feeling that the loon will not remain for long.
If the lake were going to freeze the loon would start definitely, maybe it could even go to Italy.
We arrive on the lake at 11 am and immediately we had the chance to observe it very close. The loon moved often swimming in the lake, sometimes "snorkeling" but we do not observe it fishing. I hoped it had already eaten enough in the morning but we the doubt that the loon was'nt all right.
E' la prima volta che faccio un twitch all' estero ma è una grande opportunità poter vedere una così grande rarità per l'Europa centro/meridionale a circa 400 km (6 ore) da casa.
Così non esitiamo a programmare il viaggio il prima possibile poiché ho la sensazione che la strolaga non rimarrà a lungo.
Arriviamo al lago alle 11 di mattina e subito abbiamo la fortuna di osservarla molto vicina. La strolaga si muove spesso nuotando, ogni tanto fa "snorkeling" ma non la osserviamo pescare. Ho sperato che avesse già mangiato a sufficenza al mattino ma abbiamo avuto il dubbio non stesse bene.
Unfortunately this story has a sad ending... the 26th december the loon has been found dead, the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.
This reminds us how extraordinary and dangerous are the trips that our winged friends makes.
Sfortunatamente questa storia ha un finale triste... il 26 dicembre la strolaga è stata ritrovata morta, le cause della morte saranno stabilite con un autopsia.
Questo ci ricorda quanto straordinari e pericolosi sono i viaggi che compiono i nostri amici alati.
