Rarity: Pectoral sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) in the Po Delta.
Having spent the morning watching a rarity as the black-winged pratincole I never expected to see another rarity in a matter of hours. In the early afternoon I get a message again from Menotti who report me the observation of a pectoral sandpiper near Ostellato (FE). After a couple of hours i'm there. The marshes are full of life and frequented by numerous species. I do not get bored for sure but no trace of the sandpiper. It may have moved to the next marsh but unfortunately this is much more vegetated and find him there looks like a very difficult. Luckily I find it through the plant after only 15 minutes of searching. It stays together with a group of wood sandpipers and compared to these are primarily distinguished by a distinctly reddish color (so it's a juvenile). It also really stands out the size difference, the pectoral seems distinctly smaller than wood sands, much more than what say the average size. Other features noted are: streaks on breast, scaled back, occasionally erect posture with neck extended, yellowish legs, quite long primary projection, medium-sized beak almost straight. Not long after other birdes arrives: Guido Perdisa, Pietro Melandri and Moreno Nalin. Together we can slowly get a bit closer to get some better photos and video. Also this specie is not a lifer for me (second observation for Italy) but as for the pratincole it is a first observation in "my" Po Delta!
Dopo aver passato la mattinata ad osservare una rarità come la pernice di mare orientale mai mi sarei aspettato di vedere un altra rarità nel giro di poche ore.
Nel primo pomeriggio mi arriva il messaggio del solito Menotti che mi segnala un piovanello pettorale alle vasche dello zuccherificio di Ostellato FE.
Dopo un paio d'ore sono sul posto. Le vasche sono piene di vita e frequentate da numerose specie. Non mi annoio di certo ma del piovanello nessuna traccia.
Potrebbe essersi spostato nella vasca a fianco ma purtroppo questa è molto più vegetata e ritrovarlo li dentro sembra un impresa.
Grazie ad un po' di fortuna riesco a scovarlo in mezzo alla vegetazione dopo solo 15 minuti di ricerche. Se ne sta con un gruppo di piro piro boscherecci e rispetto a questi si distingue innanzitutto per una colorazione spiccatamente rossiccia (quindi si tratta di un esemplare giovane). Spicca molto anche la differenza di dimensioni, il pettorale sembra distintamente più piccolo del boschereccio, molto più di quanto non dicano le dimensioni medie.
Altre caratteristiche annotate sono: pettorina striata, dorso "squamato", postura di tanto in tanto eretta con collo esteso, zampe giallastre, proiezione primarie abbastanza lunga, becco di medie dimensioni pressoché dritto.
Di li a poco accorrono altri birdes: Guido Perdisa, Pietro Melandri e Moreno Nalin. Assieme riusciamo pian piano ad avvicinarci un po' per ottenere qualche foto e video documentativo.
Anche questo per me non è un lifer bensì una seconda per l'Italia, ma ad ogni modo si tratta di una splendida accoppiata e soprattutto nel mio Delta (del Po)!
