A beautiful male red-flanked bluetail, in apparent breeding plumage (despite the winter season), was observed by Roberto Ceccucci on 29 January in Cingoli in the province of Macerata.
Since this is a species that I have never observed (with a couple of failed attempts in the past) and such a beautiful specimen I could not resist!
On the first day off I decided that I would leave, and the opportunity has materialized on February 1. Companion in adventure was Maurizio Azzolini, from Bolzano, with whom I met in Cesena and then go together to Cingoli.
Arrived at the place we quickly found the area where red-flanked bluetail was observed but for nearly half an hour no trace of him. A shiver of fear began to creep into my mind.
After a while we met a photographer who showed us the bush with berries attended by rfb and a little later we saw him materialize right there.
Later we found that he loved to stay in the center of the bush between a snack and other in order to protect itself from the attacks of particularly aggressive robin so we agreed that he probably had been there to observe us secretly since our arrival.
Once the rfb got used to our presence he shown itself in all his beauty proving to be very confident. While we were there he didn't eat only berries. Occasionally he fell from the branches hunting insects remembering a flycatcher (also the posture of the wings while perched reminded me a flycatcher) and at the same time it has also proved to be able on the ground moving grass and leaves with its beak like a thrush and finding a lot of larvae.
When it came time to leave I was certainly very pleased with the excellent observations but I think it was one of the times I took extra effort to leave;)!
Uno stupendo maschio di codazzurro, in apparente piumaggio riproduttivo(nonostante la stagione invernale), è stato osservato da Roberto Ceccucci il giorno 29 Gennaio a Cingoli in provincia di Macerata.
Trattandosi di una specie che non ho mai osservato (con un paio di tentativi alle spalle andati a vuoto) e di un così bel esemplare non ho potuto resistere!
Al primo giorno libero ho deciso che sarei partito e l'occasione si è materializzata il giorno 1 Febbraio. Compagno d'avventure è stato Maurizio Azzolini, proveniente da Bolzano, con il quale mi sono incontrato a Cesena per poi proseguire assieme alla volta di Cingoli.
Giunti sul luogo abbiamo trovato subito la zona in cui era stato contattato il codazzurro ma per quasi mezz'ora di lui nessuna traccia. Un brivido di paura cominciava ad insinuarsi nella mia mente.
Dopo un po' abbiamo incontrato un fotografo che ci ha indicato il cespuglio con le bacche frequentato dal codazzurro e di li a poco lo abbiamo visto materializzarsi proprio li.
In seguito abbiamo osservato che amava restare nel centro del cespuglio tra uno spuntino e l'altro anche per proteggersi dagli attacchi di un pettirosso particolarmente aggressivo per cui abbiamo convenuto che probabilmente se ne era stato li ad osservarci di nascosto sin dal nostro arrivo.
Una volta abituatosi alla nostra presenza il codazzurro si è mostrato in tutta la sua bellezza dimostrandosi anche molto confidente. Nel periodo passato la non si è cibato solo di bacche. Ogni tanto si calava dai rami cacciando insetti o invertebrati ricordando un pigliamosche o una balia (anche la posizione delle ali da posato mi ha ricordato questi ultimi) ed allo stesso tempo si è dimostrato abile anche a terra smuovendo erba e foglie con il becco come un turdide e trovando molte larve.
Quando è giunta l'ora di partire ero sicuramente molto soddisfatto per le ottime osservazioni ma credo sia stata una delle volte in cui ho fatto più fatica ad andarmene ;)!
