Rarity: Red-breasted flycatcher near Padua.
It was a long time I expected to see my first red-breasted flycatcher. In 2012 when I went to Lampedusa and Linosa I was hoping to see at least one but it did not happen. Then in January 2014 I had been a few days near Rome with the aim to twitch one that was wintering there but even that time did not go well as it disappeared a few days before.
When my friend Davide de Marchi, just back from Linosa (well known autumn destination of Ficedula parva), found one in the garden of his condominium i had a jolt. On November 12 indeed Davide heard a strange call and finds it out .... great!
I can go to Campodarsego (PD) the 14th of November. On the site I meet Guido Perdisa who is leaving after having already seen it. I see the flycatcher almost immediately but it moves a lot among the branches and foliage of 4/5 trees. It takes a little of patience to take some photos.
The flycatcher is a beautiful male and the bright red of the chest indicates a breeding plumage even though we are in fall. After a bit also my sister Laura comes to observe it and then we also know Francesco Veronesi rushed from Milan.
Sometimes the flycatchers becomes quite vociferous and it makes different calls, then he disappears for a while, and then go back out to watch you intrigued. Sometimes it makes even some duels between the foliage with a combative Robin.
Really a beautiful observation and a beautiful lifer to remember!
Era da molto tempo che aspettavo di vedere il mio primo pigliamosche pettirosso. Nel 2012 quando sono stato a Lampedusa e Linosa speravo di vederne almeno uno ma così non è stato.
Nel Gennaio 2014 poi ero stato qualche giorno a Roma con l'obiettivo di "twitcharne" uno che stava svernando la ma anche quella volta non andò bene in quanto sparì pochi giorni prima.
Quando l'amico Davide de Marchi, appena tornato proprio da Linosa (nota meta autunnale di ficedula parva), ne trova uno nel giardinetto del suo condominio ho un sussulto.
Davide infatti il 12 Novembre sente un verso strano ed incuriosito lo scopre.... fantastico!
Io riesco ad andare a Campodarsego (PD) il giorno 14. Sul sito trovo Guido Perdisa che se ne sta andando dopo averlo già visto. Il pigliamosche lo trovo subito ma si muove parecchio in mezzo ai rami e le chiome di 4/5 alberelli, per fare alcune foto ci vuole un po' di pazienza.
Il pigliamosche è un bel maschio e dal rosso vivo del petto sembra ancora in abito nonostante siamo in autunno.
Dopo un po' arriva anche mia sorella Laura ad osservarlo ed in seguito conosciamo anche Francesco Veronesi accorso da Milano.
Ogni tanto il pigliamosche diventa abbastanza vocifero e si fa sentire emettendo dei versi, poi sparisce per un po' per poi tornare fuori incuriosito ad osservarti. Ogni tanto da addirittura vita a delle scorribande tra le chiome duellando con un battagliero pettirosso.
Veramente una bella osservazione ed un bel lifer da ricordare!
